Dr Kamal Hossain - Chairperson of EURAMET in the years 2012-2015
Dr Kamal Hossain, Chairperson of EURAMET in 2012-2015 has passed away on January 20th.
We regret to inform you that on January 20 this year Dr Kamal Hossain, Chairperson of EURAMET in 2012-2015, director of science, research and external relations of the British counterpart of GUM, NPL (National Physical Laboratory) in 2000-2018, and director of international affairs of this institution from 2018, passed away. Dr Kamal Hossain, despite the fact that he was born in India, was associated with United Kingdom practically all his life and career, where he emigrated as a young man to continue his education. After graduating from the University of Cambridge in 1974, he started working in the mentioned NPL. As a recognized international expert in the field of metrology, he advised the government of United Kingdom, the European Union and UNIDO (United Nations Industrial Development Organization). In 2012, he was elected Chairperson of EURAMET, an international metrology organization associating EU, EFTA and EU candidate countries. Within EURAMET, Dr Hossain has had undeniable success, for example with the launch of the EMPIR research program, key scientific metrology research programme. In 2009, for his services, he was awarded the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II. Despite many successes and international recognition, he did not forget about his homeland in India where he joined charity activities.
Kamal visited our country and Office several times, celebrated the 95th anniversary of GUM with us in 2014, or participated in the EURAMET meeting organized in 2015 in Krakow. GUM employees also cooperated with Kamal within the international metrology organizations, where he willingly shared his experience and observed with interest development of our institution.
We will remember him not only as a world-class expert, head of the European metrology organization and director of the National Physics Laboratory or honored with prestigious state decorations, but above all as a nice, friendly colleague, ready to help and celebrate with us our successes.
