Participation of representatives of the Central Office of Measures in the celebrations of the 150th anniversary of the signing of the Metre Convention.
Celebration ceremony
On 20–22 May 2025, with the participation of representatives of the Central Office of Measures, including Vice-President Rafał Kępka, ceremonial celebrations of the 150th anniversary of the signing of the Metre Convention were held at UNESCO headquarters in Paris as well as at the convention centre in Versailles.
The event was attended by, among others, heads of National Metrology Institutes, representatives of international metrology organisations, and prominent scientists. The programme of the celebrations included a series of presentations and lectures on current trends in metrology, its latest achievements, and the history of measurements.
Lectures
The lectures were divided into thematic sessions, including:
- Opening session and discussion panels (Navigating the Future of Metrology: Addressing the Challenges of Scientific and Technical Multilateralism, Future Challenges for Global Metrology);
- Metrology for Climate Science, moderated by Dr Robert Wielgosz (BIPM);
- The FAIR Digital Revolution, moderated by Dr Vincent Gressier (BIPM);
- New Science and the Definition of the Second, moderated by Dr Patrizia Tavel (BIPM);
- Future Revolutions – Measuring for the Life Sciences, moderated by Dr Anna Cypionka (BIPM);
- Future Revolutions – Metrology in Space, moderated by Dr Martin Milton (BIPM).
One of the panellists was Prof. William D. Phillips, winner of the 1997 Nobel Prize in Physics, who spoke during the panel on the redefinition of the second.
Anniversary videos
Participants also had the opportunity to watch short videos prepared especially for the anniversary, showing the importance and role of metrology in the modern world. They are available on YouTube.
