Published by: Adam Żeberkiewicz

On 1st April 2019, the jubilee conference of the Central Office of Measures will be held at the headquarters of the Ministry of Enterprise and Technology.

The representatives of the Ministry of Enterprise and Technology, the Chancellery of the President of the Republic of Poland and the heads of institutions related to science and industry - cooperating with the Central Office of Measures will participate in the ceremony of the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the Central Office of Measures. During the metrological session the lecture entitled Quantum Hall effect and SI redefinition will be given by Professor Klaus von Klitzing - Nobel Prize laureate in the field of physics.

GUM was appointed on April 1, 1919, by virtue of the Decree on Measures, issued by the Head of State, Marshal Józef Piłsudski. The newly created office undertook the task of unification of measures in the reviving country. Already in 1922, the law on the counting of time in Poland, the first of its kind in the world, was passed. In 1925, Poland joined the International Metric Convention. Over the years, the Central Office of Measures has undergone numerous changes - both competence and structural. His fate was closely related to the history of the country. Thanks to the competences, commitment and dedication of many generations of his employees, it managed to create an efficient and modern institution, protecting the interests of the citizens of the Republic of Poland and stakeholders associated with the world of business and industry.

- In this specific moment we want to remind the history of GUM, while presenting with pride the achievements of Polish scientific research - says the acting President GUM Maciej Dobieszewski. - The jubilee conference will also be an opportunity to tell about revolutionary changes in world metrology related to the redefinition of units of measurement.

The Central Office of Measures changes its face. In 2018, funds were granted for the construction of the GUM laboratory in Świętokrzyski Campus in Kielce, in 2019 an architectural concept was selected and a contract for the design of the investment was signed.

The main celebrations of the 100th anniversary will take place on April 1, 2019 at the headquarters of the Ministry of Labor and Social Policy at Pl. Trzech Krzyży 3/5 in the Room under the Dome, on the anniversary of the appointment of Zdzisław Erazm Rauszer as the director of the Central Office of Measures.
